The Blight of the Federation: Hardrock Mining Unionism in the Mountain West, 1892-1907 by Jeff Bartos

The Blight of the Federation: Hardrock Mining Unionism in the Mountain West, 1892-1907 by Jeff Bartos

Around the turn of the century, the intermountain west’s mining districts convulsed with labor unrest. Miners formed and joined unions to fight for better wages and working conditions, while mine owners formed associations aimed at stopping these efforts and resorted to hiring undercover operatives from the Pinkerton National Detective Agency to disrupt union organizing. These clashes turned violent on several occasions: notably, in the Coeur d’Alene mining district in North Idaho in 1892 and at Cripple Creek, Colorado, between 1902 and 1904. Jeff Bartos, Publications program manager at the Montana Historical society, will explore how the Pinkerton’s campaign against the Western Federation of Miners led to a radicalization of many of its members and leadership and led to the founding of the Industrial Workers of the World.
