On three separate occasions Shackleton sought to reach the South Pole. On the first two attempts, he came closer each time, but had to turn around without achieving his goal. The third time, he never had a chance to start. His ship the Endurance was locked in the ice and eventually crushed, leading to one of the great survival stories of all times.
